Dining Chairs by Charles and Ray Eames

for Herman Miller, USA 1970s
Height: 75 cm, Diameter: 53 cm, Seat Height: 75 cm

A set of four Mid-Century Modern orange coloured fiberglass shell chairs with chrome H base in good vintage condition designed by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller. The H metal base is a 3rd generation of these shell chairs, the first two had the X base but this shape was then replaced on order to reduce cost and improve durability. The orange shell has its original finish with the typical fiberglass structure in good vintage condition. The chairs are labeld at the bottom with an original Herman Miller sticker.
Charles and Ray Eames built their single-shell chair design on the principle of universality. Two biomorphic shell shapes welcome bodies of all shapes and sizes. A choice of bases addresses most seating needs—dining, working, even rocking a baby to sleep.
In 1949, Charles and Ray designed and built their own home in Pacific Palisades, California, as part of the Case Study House Program sponsored by Arts & Architecture magazine. Their design and innovative use of materials made the House a mecca for architects and designers from both near and far. Today, it is considered one of the most important post-war residences anywhere in the world.
The world's first molded fiberglass chairs, designed by Charles and Ray Eames, are introduced by the famous US company Herman Miller Inc. which nowadays is still one of the leading manufacturers of office furniture and furniture systems, second only to Steelcase, Inc. in sales worldwide.

Designer: Eames - Manufacture: Herman Miller
Materials and Techniques: chrome, fiberglass
Place of Origin: USA
Period: 1960 - 1969
Date of Manufacture: circa 1960

Armchair "La Fonda" (Set of 2)

by Charles & Ray Eames
for La Fonda Del Sol in New York, Switzerland 1961
Height: 75 cm, Width: 63.5 cm, Depth: 56 cm, Seat Height: 47cm

The La Fonda armchairs are named after the legendary restaurant La Fonda Del Sol in New York, which was established in 1961. Charles & Ray Eames were asked to design this chair for the restaurant`s dining room, whose interior was designed by their friend Alexander Girard. The seating elements should harmonize perfectly with the rest of the furniture. The La Fonda was revolutionary for the Eames as it had the first fixed upholstery which would later be used with all plastic chairs. It also had a special gel mixed with the mold to make the fiberglass matte in finish. This resulted in the shell only ever being available in one color. The fully upholstered version has moulded polyurethane foam padding covered in fabric, attached to the shell with a welted edge. This Chair is probably one of the most elegant and unconventional bases ever designed by the Eameses.

Designer: Charles & Ray Eames
Manufacture: Vitra
Materials and Techniques: Seat shell is dyed-through polypropylene, the base is a painted aluminium cast and the feed are nylon glides
Place of Origin: Switzerland
Period: 1960 - 1969

Leather Sofa “Stringa”

by Gae Aulenti for Poltranova, Italy 1962
Height: 72 cm, Width: 191 cm, Depth: 100 cm

The “Stringa” sofa designed by Gae Aulenti for Poltranova in 1962 has a tubular chrome frame that holds leather seats on top of felt upholstered cushions. The leather cushions are attached with leather straps over the frame. The large 3-seater sofa has a beautiful patina and is very comfortable. The Sofa is in very good vintage used condition for structure and leather; only one little defect consists in the felt upholstered cushion of the superior part, as you can see in the pictures. Gae Aulenti (1927-2012) is one of the most influential architects and designers of the post-war period. Gae Aulenti was less interested in maintaining a homogenous style than in providing visionary solutions to problems. Nevertheless, almost all of her designs share a striking formal language and emblematic silhouettes. Her objects arrest the eye and remain unforgettable. Gae was well known for several large-scale museum projects, including the Musée d‘Orsay (1980 - 1986) and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, as well as the restoration of the famous Palazzo Grassi in Venice and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. She was one of the few women designing in the post-war period in Italy, where Italian designers sought to make meaningful connections to production principles beyond Italy.

Lounge Chair and Ottoman “Soriana”

by Afra and Tobia Scarpa
for Cassina, Italy 1968
Height: 63 cm, Width: 90 cm, Depth: 125 cm

Rare lounge chair and ottoman „Soriana“ with original velvet upholstery designed by the designer couple Afra and Tobia Scarpa for the Italian Manufacturer Cassina in 1969. The IDEA of the Soriana was to express a design where a whole bundle of fabric was encapsulated by a metal frame. It was a revolutionary and unique design. This iconic piece won the „Compasso D‘ oro“ award.
Afra and Tobia Scarpa are award winning postmodern Italian architects and designers. Their pieces are in museums across the United States and Europe, including collections in MOMA and the “Louvre museum”. They have won a number of awards such as the “Compasso d’ Oro” in 1969 to the “International forum design”in 1992.
The couple was influenced by Tobia’ s father, “Carlo Scarpa”, he was a Venetian architect too. Afra Bianchin was born in Montebelluna, Italy in 1937 and Tobia Scarpa was born in Venice in 1935. Both earned degrees in architecture from the University IUAV in Venice in 1957. In the beginning, from 1957 to 1961 Tobia worked as a glass designer at the Murano glassworks of Venini, and later in 1960 opened his design office in Montebelluna with Afra.
Afra and Tobia Scarpa have collaborated with companies such as “B&B Italia” and “Knoll International”. They designed for Gavina, in facts we can remember the famous sofa named “Bastiano” that was created in 1961. So, their most notable works are for B&B Italia, such as the “Coronado” sofa (1966). Talking about their work with Cassina it’ s impossible to forget the armchair “Soriana” (1968). Cassina S.p.A. (established in 1927) is an Italian furniture manufacturer that has specialized in designer-led and high-quality furniture. Originally known as “Figli Amedeo Cassina” or “Amedeo Cassina,” the company was founded by brothers Cesare and Umberto Cassina in 1927 in Meda, Lombardy. Their original home furnishing line included chairs, tables, sofas, armchairs, and beds. Today, Cassina has added outdoor furniture, cabinetry, and rugs to its product line, and it is part of the Poltrona Frau Group since 2005, which is owned by Haworth, Inc. since 2014.
